Coding
What is coding?
Coding is giving instructions to a computer in a language it understands.
Wondering what computer science looks like in elementary school?
Kindergarten to 2nd grade students learn block-based coding. This means they sequence blocks with pictures to give instructions to their characters. They use different programs such as ScratchJr, Codespark, and Kodable.
As students grow older and build their skills their coding blocks evolve with variables like time + number of movements to give specific instructions to their sprites. They use coding programs such as Microsoft Makecode, Scratch, and Code.org.

Student Minecraft House Build
What is Minecraft?
Minecraft: Education Edition is a game-based learning platform that builds STEM skills, creativity, and engages students in collaboration and problem-solving.
Students learn the basic programming language starting with Microsoft MakeCode and when they’re ready for a challenge can try out Javascript or Python that professionals use!
Isn't Minecraft just a game?
Minecraft is NOT just a game!
Students solve real-world problems following the engineering design process and work together in this immersive game environment to find solutions!

Robotics
After students learn different coding concept basics like sequencing, algorithms, and loops; they begin using what they learned code to program robots!
Sphero Indi
Kindergarten and 1st grade begin learning using Sphero Indi.
This is a screenless robot car that’s driven by the rainbow! Sphero Indi uses a special color sensor that tells it which direction to move and how fast!!!
Dash!
2nd and 3rd grade spice it up and use a robot called Dash. They can program Dash to talk, walk, dance and change LED lights! He can also talk to other Dash robots!
Sphero Bolt!
Finally, 4th and 5th grade level up to Sphero Bolt!
They learn what it takes to program Star Wars Droid robots! Customize LED lights to display messages, show blinking hearts, and so much more!

3D Printing
Ever wonder what 3D printing is?
3D printing is a manufacturing process creating a real object from a digital file!
Students learn how to use an online program called TinkerCAD, a step towards real programs that architects and engineers use!
Students develop spatial reasoning skills as they design online and bring their creations to life! Your imaginations the limit!
Microbit
Video Game Design
Microbit is a like a small computer that has different sensors which can tell when it is moving, which direction it is moving in, and has LED Displays.
Always been curious how your video game controller works?
Students from 3rd to 5th grade use ideas from coding with Microsoft MakeCode and begin a journey through video game design, creating their own games, programming their own controller, and most importantly have fun!😊
